A party of twenty three people, members and their ladies of Saddleworth Rotary Club went to Scarborough in October, to enjoy the fresh north-sea air, and the annual District 1280 Rotary Conference.

To some extent it was an adventure, as we were informed before the event that the hotel had gone into administration. However, in the event, with only minor problems, the accommodation proved to be perfectly acceptable.

The purpose of the conference is twofold. First and foremost for our members, a chance to meet with fellow Rotarians, some of whom we haven't seen for some time. But it also has a serious purpose: being brought up to date with Rotary aims and achievements, and listening to inspiring speakers from various backgrounds.

As might be expected, much of the first aim was satisfied around the bars and lounges of the hotels, but their were two evenings official entertainment. These included The Backbeat Beatles, a tribute group, The First Stage Theatre Company, from Manchester, and Jayne Curry, an excellent singer.

Three formal sessions provided the serious conference matter. Craig Hammond, who spent most of his life with a severe stammer, gave a remarkable presentation: no notes, and totally free from stammering, which he learned to control through Starfish Project. Equally impressive was Danny Lane, born profoundly deaf. He now teaches young deaf people how to appreciate music.

One of the more serious speakers was Col. Bob Stewart, M.P., who British Commander under the UN in Bosnia in 1992/3. He spoke of his experiences in that theatre of war. Simon Maddrell, of the charity Excellent, told us of pioneering work with sand dams in Africa, which seem to have great promise.

A final bit of humour was provided by Two Men in White Coats, who produced a variety of bangs and bright lights, showing that science can be interesting.

All in all, an excellent conference, enjoyed by all who attended.
